Formed in 1993, e.spire seeks to be a leading facilities-based integrated communications provider to businesses.

e.spire operates 38 local area fiber-optic networks, including six in major metropolitan markets including Atlanta, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, New York, Philadelphia. San Antonio, and Washington, DC/Northern Virginia. It also has a 194-mile longhaul network between New York and Northern Virginia.

The company is a full service telecommunications provider offering local dial tone, long distance and 800 service, PRIs, Internet Access, Frame Relay, ATM and DSL service in each market. As of December 31, 2000, e.spire’s network is comprised of 28 Class 5 voice switches, 222,555 fiber miles, and 3,900 route miles.

The Company's dedicated services provide high capacity non-switched interconnections between PoPs of Inter Exchange Carriers (IXCs), large business and government end-users.

The Company utilizes Newbridge ATM networking technology on its data backbone network, allowing its network capacity to be efficiently shared between multiple platforms. e.spire's local networks are comprised of fiber optic cable, integrated switching facilities, advanced electronics, data switching equipment—frame relay and ATM—transmission equipment and associated wiring and equipment.

To support advanced, high-speed data transport, e.spire has constructed a nationwide ATM-based multiservice network. The company is also a Tier-1 Internet access provider with private, as well as public, peering interconnections to ensure that customer traffic is routed quickly and reliably.

e.spire provides local, long distance, Internet, Webhosting and advanced data solutions. It operates a combination network consisting of a facilities-based infrastructure and Internet subsidiaries, including Annapolis Junction, MD-based ACSI Network Technologies.
